On this sacred day of Buddha Purnima, we talk about Buddha and purnima (full moon). But we seldom enquire into Buddha's teachings, his virtue,s and the exemplary way in which he led his life.
King Suddhodhana and his wife Mayadevi performed many spiritual austerities such as japa (soft repetition of the name), tapa (austerities), vratas (vows), and yajnas (rituals) for years together with an aspiration to have a son. They also consulted many astrologers. Suddhodhana had no peace of mind, because the worry of not having an heir to the throne haunted him day and night. At last their prayers were answered when Mayadevi gave birth to a son at Lumbini.

Man today is acquiring various types of knowledge. Among these he is learning how to live and act like lions and other animals.
What is the meaning of knowledge (jnana)? It is not mere acquaintance with numerous books. Even the acquisition of information about all the objects in the animate and inanimate is not knowledge. True knowledge is awareness of the relationship between the individual and collective (samashti) and their oneness.
Men today do not recognize the nature their humanness. How can they recognize their inherent divinity?
It is only when man is aware of his humanness that he will be competent to recognize his divinity. How then, is man to reach humanness? What is the means? Buddha undertook various inquiries to discover the Divine and came to the conclusion that it is only through mastery over his senses he can achieve this. Man has to make the right use of his senses for sacred purposes to realize his divinity.
